Long-sleeved Flower Top (Challenge Create: Adult Edition Week 4)

This week's challenge for Challenge Create: Adult Edition is "Destash" and I had fun digging deep into my stash and trying to make use of some items that I've had for a long time. I found a green/brown/grey jersey knit that I bought several years ago. I don't think I ever had a plan for it, but I need more long-sleeved tops and there was enough fabric to make one so I did. The pattern is - of course - my favourite t-shirt pattern from Ottobre 2/2007.

Since the fabric in itself is rather boring, I put some effort into the details. For the hems I dug out a twin needle that I haven't used for a long time. I used two different brown threads that go well with the earthy colour of the fabric. The neckline is finished with an ordinary t-shirt binding, but I let the ends overlap to make it more interesting. I could have left it there, but decided to embellish the top a little bit. In my button stash I found these little off-white buttons. I sewed them onto the top and hand embroidered the stem and leaves of the little flower.

Det här grön/brun/grå trikåtyget har jag haft flera år, köpt billigt utan någon egentlig plan. Nu fick det bli en långärmad tröja eftersom jag behöver fler sådana. Tyget i sig är inte jätteroligt så jag fokuserade mer på detaljerna. Ärmarna och nederkanten är fållade med tvillingnål, och halsringningen har en vanlig mudd som jag lät gå omlott för att den skulle bli lite mer intressant. På bröstet har jag sytt fast fem små pärlemorknappar och broderat stam och blad för att göra en liten blomma.

Polka Dot Dress (Challenge Create: Adult Edition Week 3)

"(Hint of) Vintage" is this week's theme for Challenge Create: Adult Edition. When it comes to vintage clothing I'm drawn to the lovely dresses of the 1950's and 1960's, and the dress that I made for this challenge is actually a combination of both of these decades. I had two suitable patterns on hand; one modern but 1950's inspired pattern and one vintage 1960's pattern, and couldn't decide which one to use. I liked the look of the 1960's dress but was afraid that I would find the high-rise neck uncomfortable. I liked the 1950's inspired one as well, but I know that a gathered skirt will make me look pregnant (which I'm not!). And then I got the idea - why not use the bodice from the 1950's inspired pattern and the skirt from the 1960's pattern? So that's what I tried, and it worked out very well! (I'm probably breaking lots of unwritten rules here - I told my sister, who is a history student, about my plans and she was a bit horrified that I was going to combine two decades... but I never said the dress was going to be historically correct, right?) Here's a look at the two patterns:

The 1950's inspired pattern is the "Lavinia" dress from Ottobre 2/2012, and the vintage pattern is called Burda "2 0523". (Probably out-of-print since 40 years ago or so...) The polka-dot fabric with its 1950's vibe is 100 % cotton and it started its life as a duvet cover that I picked up at a thrift store a few years ago with the intention of making a vintage-inspired dress. This challenge was exactly what I needed to finally get it done! The lining fabric is another thrift store find that I had on hand, and so is the zipper. (Sounds like I could have entered this dress for next week's Destash challenge as well!)

Each time I sew a dress I'm surprised at how much work it is, and this time was no exception. Combining two patterns was trickier than I thought, because it meant that I had no instructions for how to put the two parts together. It worked out well in the end but I had to think and re-think the process several times. But it was a lot of fun as well, and I'm happy with the dress!

Jag kombinerade två mönster, ett nytt men 1950-talsinspirerat mönster från Ottobre 2/2012 och ett Burda-mönster från 1960-talet, genom att använda överdelen från Ottobre-mönstret och kjoldelen från 60-talsmönstret. Det var lite klurigt men blev bra till slut! Tyget är inköpt på second hand just för att sy en vintage-inspirerad klänning, och nu tre år senare är den äntligen klar!

Colour Block Tee (Challenge Create: Adult Edition Week 2)

This week's theme for Challenge Create: Adult Edition is "Refashion". Those who follow my blog know that I love refashioning, so this was certainly a theme in my liking! For this challenge I chose to make a blue and white colour block tee.

I started out with one blue tank top that was slightly too big for me and had a stain that I couldn't remove, and one white t-shirt that there was nothing wrong with except that the web adress for a local public transport company was printed on one of its arms. When thinking about what I could make out of the tank top I soon came to the conclusion that there wasn't enough fabric for making an entire new garment, and that's when I came up with the idea of combining it with the white t-shirt to make a colour block t-shirt. I also included a little scrap from a previous refashion to make the pocket.

I'm really happy with how my colour block tee turned out! I was able to reuse the shoulder seams and bottom hem from the white t-shirt, which is a good thing since it makes the sewing process quicker. The pocket detail is definitely not original; I've seen lots of colour block tops with a pocket in another colour placed across a horizontal seam, but this time it isn't just a design detail. The pocket has the additional purpose of covering the stain on the tank top (yes, I turned the front piece upside down).

Summary in Swedish: Veckans tema för "Challenge Create: Adult Edition" är "Refashion", vilket ju är ett tema helt i min smak! Jag använde ett blått linne som var aningens för stort för mig och hade en fläck som inte gick bort i tvätten, och en vit t-shirt som hade webadressen till ett lokaltrafikbolag tryckt på ena ärmen. Dessa två plagg kombinerade jag ihop till en "colour block"-t-shirt. Detaljen med fickan har jag inte kommit på själv, jag har sett liknande tröjor med en ficka sydd över en söm på det här sättet, men i det här fallet är fickan inte bara en kul detalj utan den täcker också fläcken på det blå linnet.

Flower Petal Top (Challenge Create: Adult Edition week 1)

This week's theme for Challenge Create: Adult Edition is "Nature Inspired", and I was inspired by all the colorful spring flowers that have begun to grow during the past few weeks.

For my Flower Petal Top I used my favourite shirt pattern from Ottobre 2/2007, adding a scalloped hem to mimic flower petals and a Peter Pan style collar to go with the overall style of the top. A tutorial from The Coletterie was helpful when I tried to figure out how to make the scallops. 

The fabric is a bright turquoise/petrol jersey knit, probably a cotton/lycra blend (but I'm not sure since I bought it from a thrift store a while ago). I've been thinking of using it for making a shirt that's a little fancier than the plain shirts I usually make, so this was a perfect project! 

Summary in Swedish: Det här är mitt bidrag till veckans tema "Nature Inspired" i tävlingen Challenge Create: Adult Edition. Som synes inspirerades jag av alla fina vårblommor som växer så här års. Jag använde mitt favorittröjmönster från Ottobre 2/2007, och hittade en beskrivning på hur man kan sy en vågig fåll som i det här fallet skulle symbolisera blomblad. Tyget är köpt på second hand och jag har tänkt att jag skulle använda det till att göra en lite "finare" och mer arbetad tröja än dem jag vanligtvis syr, så det här var ett perfekt projekt!

Challenge Create: Adult Edition

Challenge Create är en sömnadstävling på en amerikansk syblogg som jag hittade nyligen. Tävlingen består av två delar; en del där fyra på förhand utvalda deltagare tävlar mot varandra och en "sew-along"-del där alla intresserade får vara med. De fyra första veckorna i april (med tjuvstart idag, sista mars) har varsitt tema och som deltagare i den öppna tävlingen har man måndag morgon till fredag morgon på sig att länka till sitt bidrag till temat. Sedan är det omröstning i båda tävlingsdelarna under helgen. Om jag har förstått det rätt är varje veckotema i den öppna delen en enskild tävling så man måste inte vara med varje vecka.

Jag har tänkt att jag ska vara med i den öppna tävlingen - inte för att jag tror att jag har någon chans att vinna (det brukar alltid vara många avancerade kreationer i dylika tävlingar) utan för att utmana mig själv och se till att det blir av att jag syr några av de där sakerna jag länge har tänkt sy. För jag tänker se till att mina tävlingsbidrag är användbara och helst är något jag har planerat att sy, fast med en vinkling så att det passar till temat.

Om ett par timmar kan man länka till det första temat, Nature Inspired, så då kommer mitt första tävlingsinlägg! Det kommer vara på engelska eftersom det är en amerikansk tävling, men jag gör en svensk summering i slutet.

Jag har hittat några liknande tävlingar tidigare och tycker att det är kul att titta igenom gamla "säsonger" och se hur deltagarna har tolkat alla teman. Om någon annan är intresserad finns de här:
